Mike and I just started receiving a subscription--to Cook's Country Magazine. If you go to the site, you can get a free trial mag, and it's $19.95 for a year's subscription. It is an awesome magazine, part of 'America's Test Kitchen', a TV show that's seen on PBS (I think). ATK takes recipes and makes them better. Cook's Country Magazine does also, and there's lots of cooking tips as well as cookware reviews. There's tons of good dishes for dinner, dessert, pretty much anything you'd want. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to find something to make for dinner instead of being in a rut cooking-wise.
Tonight I'm making Lemon Chicken and Homemade Mac 'N Cheese for dinner. These recipes can't be accessed on the Cook's Country site unless you pay for an online membership. There's more details on the web page.
About three weeks ago, Mike and I were talking about Chinese food. What dishes we like and so on. He suggested that I Google some recipes since we haven't been able to find a really good Chinese cookbook. I found two recipes we like--Sweet and Sour Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice.
Mike prefers Chicken Fried Pork, but pork doesn't agree with me, so when we're at our favorite Chinese restaurant, he'll order the Chicken. I made both the Sweet and Sour Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice from the recipes I found and they came out great. Mike said he prefers my S&CC and CFR to the restaurant's now...so I make these dishes about every two weeks.
I'm making S&SC and CFR tonight as well as General Tso's Chicken for Brian. It takes a lot of work for me to get everything prepped but it's worth it.
The only things we need to round out the meal are some egg rolls, tea, and chopsticks.
There are quite a number of recipes for baked goods in this issue. I don't know if this is the norm for Paula, but I know she loves sweets. There are some chili recipes I might try too. I will try some of the recipes for cakes and muffins and substitute the butter and other fattening things she bakes with. I've watched her show on the Food Network and I know Paula's all about butter, cream cheese, peanut butter, sugar and (sometimes) chocolate in her baked goods. All those things are great, but I like them in moderation.
One part of the magazine I love is Paula showing how she decorates her home. There are also photos of Bobby Deen's bedroom and bath. All the photos were really impressive to me and I'll keep them to use for ideas for future painting and remodeling. The tone of the magazine is the same as Paula's show: warm and friendly. I think I'll drop my subscription to Rachel Ray's magazine and keep this one.
